California hidden treasure stories has much to do with the gold rush of the middle 1800's. There are hundreds of abandoned gold and silver mines that dot the State. Many of these mines are now lost, meaning that either natural forces caused the entrances to the caves to crumble, or that the owners, or the Indians dynamited the caves closed. However, there are also stories of buried treasures from robberies of different kinds.
In either case, below are nine lost treasures in California.
MISSION VALLEY
The Mission of San Luis Obispo is a Mission that is still standing about 75 miles northwest of Santa Barbara. In 1772 a Spanish settlement was built around the Mission. In the 1900's when the Mission was rebuilt workers found silver bars hidden in the floors beneath the chapel. Legend has it that there is still buried treasure lying in wait, ready to be recovered.
The ruins of the Mount Ophir Mintare located outside of Mariposa and dates to 1850. A large number of gold coins are supposedly buried on the property.
Myrtletowne has a supposed buried treasure of approximately 5,000. In the late 1800's a stagecoach loaded with gold bullion was robbed. The outlaws apparently buried the bullion in the town's vicinity.
The Ghost Town of Skiddo is located off State Rte 190 approx. 9 miles east of Emigrant Junction in Death Valley. This was a main borax-mining town that was deserted before 1900.
The San Antonio de Padua Mission is located on US 101 approx twenty miles southwest of King City. This Mission was established in 1771. Treasures are believed to be buried in the area.
Mattole River located south of Eureka. There have been gold and silver coins dated between 1804 and 1809 found on the beaches. A shipwreck offshore is the apparent reason for the coins.
Town of Weed is located in Siskiyou Cty. A buried treasure of stolen gold coins is believed to be buried here.
The Willow Creek Post Office Robbery. In 1928, this post office was robbed of ,000 in gold coins. The robbers buried the gold coins in New River Canyon, at the mouth of New River, near Eureka.
Mattole River beaches have been spewing gold and silver coins that date between 1804 and 1809. They have been found on the north and south side of the river, south of Eureka. Apparently, they have washed up to shore from a shipwreck close by. Good luck in your search for hidden treasure.
