The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) is located adjacent to its Mexican-border river at the southern-most tip of Texas. This subtropical 4,300-square-mile valley is about 140-miles wide and 35-miles deep. It comprises four main counties with the following approximate non-winter populations:
Cameron on the east end including South Padre Island (370,000) Willacy just north of Cameron (22,000) Hidalgo to the west of the previous two, centrally located (650,000) Starr to the west of Hidalgo (58,000).
MISSION VALLEY
Cameron and Hidalgo are call metro counties because they hold about 60% both of the valley's total population and the recreational-vehicle (RV) parks there. Also, a small lower tip of a fifth county, Zapata, on the far west end of the valley could be absorbed into this valley information. This tip contains the big International Falcon Reservoir on the Rio Grande River.

Winter Texans.
The Winter Texans consist mostly of seniors and retired people (about 98% Caucasian), who migrate annually from the cold North American climates to several locations in southern Texas to spend their winter months there, usually for varied lengths of time between October and May. Many are from the cold northern climates in the Midwest and Canada. About 150,000 of these trekkers make the Valley their temporary winter home.
These seasonal Texans will actively hibernate in one of the 300-400 organized RV parks in there, where they can enjoy its warmer climate, nature parks, outdoor sports, beaches, attractions, and dining in addition to taking part in the facilities and social activities in the RV parks themselves.
