The Lowe's Companies, Inc. web site also makes company job openings information available, but it is not the focus of the web site and it therefore takes a bit of navigating to get to the employment opportunities section. The corporate web site focus is on servicing the millions of customers who shop at Lowe's and is arranged for ease of finding products to purchase and store locations. It is, therefore, easier to find the latest job information and to find it quicker using any of a number of independent job finder sites and services that come up immediately in response to a search request for Lowes jobs or Lowes employment.

The one thing that is consistent when applying for employment at any large corporation is the necessity of following a process. A Lasting Scent

Look no further for long lasting perfumes. House of Rose makes them and they last more than twice as long as the other perfumes. The secret is simple. They contain no alcohol which causes quick evaporation. Instead they use a base that is actually good for your skin. They also contain laboratory certified human pheromones, which are attractants. Harrods of London pipes them through their store HVAC system to encourage customers to feel good...and make more purchases. House of Rose buys from the same manufacturer as Harrods.

Owner, Jane Langdon, started her business because her favorite Crabtree & Evelyn perfume was discontinued and she couldn't find another. After studying chemistry and being schooled in perfumery, she mixed her own. Soon after, people began to ask her what she was wearing and House of Rose began as an internet business with one rose perfume. E mail poured in asking her to make other floral perfumes and they now offer many others including Azalea, Carnation, Freesia, Gardenia, Honeysuckle, Hydrangea, Lavender, Lilac, Lily of the Valley, Magnolia, Orchid, and Violet.

MISSION VALLEY

Men also began asking, so Autumn, Bayberry, Bay Rum, Citrus Spice, New Spice, Fireside, Lemon Grass, Ocean, Sandalwood and Sea Breeze were created. To her surprise, half the orders were from women who wanted a fresh or spicy scent. Her sons asked her to make some fun scents so she surveyed teens across the country and developed a line called "Scent Bent" just for them. There are 29 flavors including Baby Powder, Bubble Gum, Chocolate Mint, Fresh Cotton. Strawberry and Tangerine. As Jane says, "Keep your perfume, business and life simple."

Basement Remodeling Materials to Purchase

Ever since I started remodeling basements way back in 1992, I have always relied on just 2 primary suppliers for better than 90% of ALL of my contracting supplies. Those 2 suppliers are 2 of the biggest SUPER STORES for building supplies on the planet and they are the Home Depot and Lowes.

lowes home improvement

And since I do not supply bathroom and wet bar fixtures and appliances for my clients jobs, my clients are asked to shop at these stores for their supplies as well. At these two stores my clients have a huge selection of bathroom fixtures, faucets, sinks, and even appliances. They also have a great selection of bar and vanity tops in solid surfaces (like granite and marble) and several brands of good old fashioned Formica tops!

LOWES

Just about the ONLY materials that I choose not to buy at these Super Stores are a few misc. special order plumbing and electric supplies. Occasionally I will purchase my drywall from a supplier who just sells drywall supplies, normally they can beat the "big box" stores prices because they buy in such volume.

If you did not watch the video I did about "How much will my basement remodeling project cost me to do?" In this video I give you a long list of materials EVERYTHING INCLUDED) that I use to finish a typical basement. I can get over 90% of everything on this huge list I talk about at either Home Depot or Lowes!

Most every town USA has at least one of these Super Stores close to home! Open up a contractor account and a lot of times they will give you a 10% discount on your 1st purchase! Get it all on one order and store it some place until it's needed on the job site and you could save hundreds of dollars if not a thousand or more!

As an additional service of my basement remodeling company I also offer basement designing and floor plans for my clients. This service is for clients that want to do the work themselves, but need a professional Designed Layout and a detailed Floor Plan from which to build from and use to order building permits.

When a client asks me for this service, I will also include a detailed materials list with an estimated material cost sheet for the home owners to shop from. This way no materials are missed and the client has an estimate for how much they need to spend on materials from the gate! I am getting ready to begin offering this service over the internet and will soon be adding this service (Basement Finishing 101) to my website

The plan also comes with 6 hours of video instruction and training that details a finished basement remodel from A-Z for the client to follow! It's like having a subcontractor from every trade standing beside you showing you exactly what to do next! The videos are extremely detailed and very technical. I will be offering this service over the internet for a limited time!

So there you have it! Home Depot and Lowes for almost all of your building materials shopping!

Wine and Witches in South Africa's Hex Valley

When the moon glitters on the first snow of winter, a bewitching young woman is said to walk the Hex River Valley tragically searching for her lost love. Some say Eliza is South Africa's most famous witch, whilst others know her as the daughter of a lowly farmhand who became mentally ill after causing her only love to fall to his death:

Eliza was a beautiful young woman whose stunning looks ensured that she had numerous suitors. However, she was also a spoilt and self-centred girl, and when she fell in love with Frans she was determined that he worked hard for her affections. In order to marry her he must pick her a red disa in the kloofs of the Matroosberg; the highest peak in South Africa's Hex Valley.

MISSION VALLEY

The red disa is a stunning bright red orchid, which is still spotted by lucky walkers in the Matroosberg. Spottings are rare though and the plant has a predilection for growing in inaccessible places, such as ravines and steep mossy gorges. To pick a disa is near impossible without mountaineering equipment, and Frans, unprepared for the task, slipped and fell with a brilliant red disa in his hand.

On hearing that her young lover had died, Eliza was beside herself and became mentally unstable. Her parents kept her locked her in her bedroom and if you had visited the old farmstead a couple of years ago, before it was demolished, you would have spotted "Eliza 1868" scratched into the old windowsill.

One night, wearing just a nightgown, Eliza broke out of her prison and wandered to the foothills of the mountains, where Frans had walked previously. There she sat and sobbed, but the outcrop crumbled beneath her and she also fell to her death. Some say that her ghost wanders the Matroosberg on moonlit lights, crying and wringing her hands. In Afrikaans, they call her the Heks van Hex Rivier, or the witch of the Hex River.

Witches and disas may be one reason to visit the Hex River Valley, but there is a far better one ¬- wine! The wine-producing region is located just a 1.5 hour drive from Cape Town and the small town of De Dooms boasts South Africa's longest harvest season. Autumn here is magnificent as the vines change into rich reds and golds providing a stunning backdrop against the blue-hued mountains. Wine tasting is a must, and many of the local vineyards provide tours of the chateau, followed by brisk lessons in how to sample the goods.

One of South Africa's most friendly game reserves is located in the Hex River Valley. The Aquila Reserve, named after a rare black eagle that thrives in the area. Aquila is known for its cheetahs and it highlights the plight of this cat and its rapidly diminishing numbers. Aquila's cheetahs were born in captivity and therefore don't form part of Aquila's game drive, but a safari around the reserve lets you spot all of South Africa's big five from lion to rhinoceros. From lion and cheetah to witches and wine, a trip to the Hex River Valley is certain to leave you bewitched.

Good Finds- Hotels in Tucson, Arizona

Tucson is the largest city in southern Arizona and the second largest in the state, next to Phoenix. The name Tucson stems from the Spanish word Cuk Son, which means Black Base. This refers to the west site of the city, which is notably littered with volcanic mountains. The city itself is a panoramic tableau of rolling hills, cactus forests, and mountains that seem as boundless and eternal as the sky.

lowes bathroom vanities

In history, Tucson is a melting pot of the cultures of two countries: the United States and Mexico. It has a long history of settlement, first by the native Americans, then by the Spanish explorers, and finally, by frontier pioneers. Clearly, Tucson combines just the right mix of history with natural beauty, and it is precisely this mixture that attracts visitors in hordes.

LOWES

If you're planning to visit the city, you need not worry. There are many hotels in Tucson, Arizona and these run the gamut from affordable to heartbreakingly expensive. If you're on a tight budget, the best accommodation for you would be an accredited member of the Arizona Association of Bed and Breakfast Inns. One of the little hotels in Tucson, Arizona that you could try is the Elysian Grove Market, an historic Tucson Barrio Bed and Breakfast. It is a quaint little inn that is furnished with folk art and antiques from both the southwest and Mexico. It boasts of a garden teeming with cactus, mesquites, fountains, and hummingbirds.

If this is not your cup of tea, however, you could take your pick from the bigger hotels in Tucson, Arizona. One example is the Lowes Ventana Canyon Resot. Nestled within the foothills of the Catalina Mountains, the Lowes has 398 guestrooms and each one has its own balcony that showcases the breathtaking view of the desert, he Catalina Mountains, or rows upon rows of Tucson buildings.

Another good pick from among the hotels in Tucson, Arizona is the Arizona Inn. This four-star retreat was built in the 1930s and boasts not only of thoroughly modern amenities and wonderful landscapes, but also of a daily ice-cream social which takes place by its 60-feet outdoor pool, from June to September.

My final pick would be a most welcome place for avid golf players. Among the countless hotels in Tucson, Arizona is one that rests on a 650-acre championship golf course. The Omni Tucson National Resort was named one of the 75 Best Golf Resorts in North America by the Golf Digest. It has 167 large guestrooms, all of them located in different buildings throughout the resort. All rooms have large walk-in closets, separate vanity areas, and its own fully-furnished patio with the guest's choice of mountain or golf course view. As part of its package, the Omni offers free use of its tennis club, along with free lessons, for its guests.

If you want to book any of the places I reviewed, or perhaps expand your selection of hotels in Tucson, Arizona, visit online sites such as http://holiday4you.com and try their search engines. Tuscan, Arizona is as good a place as any to enjoy the nightlife, play golf on pristine courses, feast on sumptuous dishes, and revitalize the body, and the mind at tranquil spas.

South Africa - The Maloti Mountains Drive

Some of the most stunning scenery in South Africa can be seen in the eastern part of the Free State, along the border with Lesotho. When you take the Maloti Mountains Drive, you will see spectacular sandstone formations that rival those of Monument Valley in the western USA. With the varying sunlight, the rock appears gold, yellow, pink, gray and brown. There are stands of tall Lombardy poplars and bushy gray poplars. In spring and summer the fields are green with wheat and corn, but are an earthy brown in the winter. You will cross and re-cross the Klein (Little) Caledon River several times. On your left you will see the often snow-capped Maloti Mountains of Lesotho.

Golden Gate Highlands National Park

MISSION VALLEY

Your drive begins in Golden Gate Highlands National Park, the only nature reserve in the Free State. This park is wedged between the north-western edge of the province of KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho. The magnificent scenery begins with the majestic sandstone cliffs to your left and right as you drive out of the park. Eleven miles (18 km) along the R712 highway, you come to the little town of Clarens. This community was named after the town in Switzerland where Paul Kruger, the greatest Afrikaaner hero of South Africa, died in exile in 1904. Situated among low rolling hills, Clarens has become a popular tourist destination. People come here for the art galleries, great restaurants, bars and shops. There is a tourist information centre called Clarens Destinations on the town square. Stop in there if you want to arrange a side trip to Schaapplaats, a short drive down a gravel road, to see San rock paintings.

Fascinating Ancient Art: Please Tip the Guide

Your side trip to the farm at Schaapplaats is only about a ten minute drive. There, a guide will take you on a short walk up a valley to a large overhanging cave. Inside, you can view intriguing rock paintings, some of which are thousands of years old. They depict antelope, and strange beast-headed shamans wrapped in animal skins. This is an amazing encounter with human pre-history in South Africa. Be sure to give the guide a reasonable gratuity.

Remembering the Boer War

When you return to the main highway, you will be on the R711. Turn left and you will be heading for Fouriesburg. At about the halfway point, you will come to Surrender Hill. A bronze plaque marks this as an important site in the history of South Africa. It was here in July of 1900 during the Boer War (now called the South African War) that a large force of Boer soldiers surrendered to the British; a major setback for the Boer cause. A little farther on, an observation point provides a magnificent view of the Little Caledon Valley, with the Maloti Mountains and Lesotho beyond.

Pretty Fouriesburg

Continue your drive through the lovely South African countryside to the pretty community of Fouriesburg, about 22 miles (36 km) from Clarens. This typical Free State small town is a great place to stop for lunch and take a local tour. Several of the buildings are made from the local golden brown sandstone. Visitors looking for unique South African souvenirs can check out the Matsoho Arts and Crafts. The Maloti Mountains Drive is a good half-day tour.

Doggin' Las Vegas: Where To Hike With Your Dog When In Sin City

Sunset Park at East Sunset Road and S. Eastern Avenue is a traditional urban
recreational park with ballfields and playgrounds. While lacking an extensive trail
system, there is fresh green grass and shade trees aplenty that will be a welcome
sight for any dog visiting Las Vegas. A paved trail traces the edge of a prominent
artificial pond and beyond that is a patch of undeveloped mesquite-dunes land
similar to what all Las Vegas looked like before the coming of neon.

For some serious hikes with your dog head out of town to the northeast and Valley
of Fire State Park. The stunning red sandstone rock formations that give the Valley
of Fire its name are the result of great shifting sand dunes. Two thousand years ago
the Basket Maker people traveled here and left rock art reminders of their visits that
can be seen today. In 1935 the Valley of Fire, now 34,000 acres, was dedicated as
Nevada's first state park.

MISSION VALLEY

Dogs are welcome on all nine short interpretive trails, all easily accessed from the
main park roadways. In many places the hiking is over fine red sand trails. The
feature trail here is the White Domes Loop Trail in the far northern section of the
park. The path circles through rock formations and a slot canyon on its one-mile
odyssey. Look for the stone ruins of a movie set from The Professionals when Lee
Marvin led a crew of four hard-edged adventurers on a rescue mission for a
kidnapped woman. Many movies have used the Valley of Fire as a backdrop but
this is the only set in the park as filmmakers are no longer allowed to abandon their
sets.

The quick hikes in the Valley of Fire are especially attractive for dogs visiting in the
summer when the sun's rays bouncing off the red rocks make the landscape appear
on fire - and feel like it. Canine hikers visiting Las Vegas in more hospitable weather
can also enjoy red rocks just west of town, heading out West Charleston Boulevard
to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

A 13-mile scenic drive winds through the iron-tinged sandstone mountains and
climbs about 1000 feet. Parking areas are liberally sprinkled along the route that
provide access to 19 hiking trails. Many of the routes explore side canyons with
only moderate elevation gains of a few hundred feet.

The most difficult of the Red Rock Canyon trails is the climb along the Turtlehead
Peak Trail. This five-mile round trip is never too punishing as it makes its way to
the 6,323-foot summit. Your purchase is sweeping views of the Calico Hills and the
city of Las Vegas.

To reach Valley of Fire State Park take I-15 north out of Las Vegas for 55 miles
to the Valley of Fire Road. Head east to the park's West Entrance Station.

The Army-Ant in Technology

Then, when they reached the Valley of the Ants, an ant said: "Ants! Enter your dwellings, so that Sulayman and his troops do not crush you unwittingly." (Qur'an, 27:18)

The "Valley of the Ants" refers to a special place and special ants. In addition, the fact that Prophet Sulayman (as) could hear the ants talking among themselves may contain striking references to future developments in computer technology. The present-day term "Silicon Valley" refers to the centre of the world of technology. It is most significant that a "valley of the ants" appears in the account of Prophet Sulayman's (as) life. Allah may be drawing our attention to the advanced technology of the future.

MISSION VALLEY

Furthermore, ants and other insect species are widely used in advanced technology as models in robot projects and are intended to serve in a wide range of areas, from the defence industry to technology. The verse may also be referring to these developments.

Latest Developments in Miniature Technology: Army-Ant Robots

The best known project using ants as a model are the "Army-Ant Robot" projects being carried out independently in several countries. One study being carried out by the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and Virginia State University seeks to develop small, inexpensive, and simple physically identical robots that can be used as a robot army. Project officials explain these robots' functionality in the following terms: "The way they behave as a group, in a coordinated manner, perform a series of physical actions, and take joint decisions." These robot armies' mechanical and electrical designs have been based on the behaviour of an ant community. They are called the "army-ant" robots because of their similarities to their insect counterparts.

The "army-ant" robot system was originally designed as a "material-carrying system." According to this scenario, several small robots would be charged with jointly lifting and carrying objects. It was later decided that they could be used for other tasks. One report describes other tasks to which they might be assigned in the future:

Nuclear and hazardous waste cleanup with robotic "swarms," mining (including material removal and search-and-rescue), mine sweeping (both land and water), surveillance and sentry, planetary surface exploration and excavation. 1

In a report by Israel A. Wagner, an expert on ant robot technology, the ant robot projects were described in these terms:

Ant-robots are simple physical or virtual creatures designed to cooperate in order to achieve a common goal. They are assumed to have very limited resources of energy, sensing and computing, and to communicate via traces left in the workspace or on the ground, like many insects naturally do...

The distribution of work among multiple a(ge)nts can be made by either a central controller who sends orders to the agents, or by an a-priori agreement on a certain partitioning that, if obeyed by the agents, eventually leads to a completion of the given mission. A third way, used throughout the current work, is to design the behavior of individuals such that cooperation will naturally emerge in the course of their work, without making a-priori decisions on the structure of the cooperation. The specific application that we address is covering, which is also known as exploring or searching. This variety of names hints to the many applications this problem might have: from cleaning the floor of a house to mapping an unknown planet or demining a mine field. 2

As can be seen in these examples, an ant's social lifestyle forms the basis of many projects, and the various ant-based robot technologies are providing benefits for human beings. That is why it is so important that ants and their valley are referred to in the Qur'anic account of Prophet Sulayman's (as) life. The term "ants" in the verse may refer to an army consisting of robots, future developments in robot technology, and how robots will play an important role in human life. For example, they may perform many arduous tasks and thus make people's lives more comfortable. (Allah knows best.)

If you think it's going to cost you a lot hiring someone to take care of your rental properties, this article will show you 7 ways to save and make more money using professional.

MISSION VALLEY

Capitalize on Rental Income. Our property managers have the edge of knowing how many properties of the same level are renting, how much they are rented for, and what a tenant is capable or willing to pay. Not to mention they are good at advertising and marketing, presenting your properties to get the best, maximum rental charge while minimizing the vacancies as well.
Keep Vacancies to a Minimum. Since property managers know the real estate market, seeking tenants would usually call a property manager to directly inquire regarding available spaces. They also know where and how to advertise available properties to a diverse target pool of potential renters. Therefore, you can be sure that your property will be rented to quality tenants as quick as possible.
Seek Quality Renters. Professional companies have the tools for screening quality tenants thereby keeping eviction rates low. This is one important aspect as they can do thorough criminal background checks, credit card checks, rental history, employment history, and reference checks. Property managers know and understand how to look for renters that will likely cause few or no headaches.
Cover Repairs and Maintenance. Property managers are able to keep up the property for you - organizing day-to-day maintenance and even resolving pressing situations. Their connections with highly regarded vendors will help you save through the discounted rates they obtain, and their expertise will help you avoid unnecessary expenses. Not only that, they are able to check on the renters and keep an eye on your property to not be mistreated.
Publicize Your Property. Two of the best skills that we have is advertising and marketing. With good connections to websites, newspapers, and magazines, property managers can bring your property effective publicity on top of keeping the costs at discounted rates. Another thing is, they too can handle appointments to directly showcase your property.
Take Care of Paperwork. We handle administrative as well as financial tasks. They will assist in the negotiations and signing of agreements; handle collection of rent, bills, and other expenses needed to be paid on time; and even find you the best insurances to cover your property. You can also have the choice of letting them take care of your accounting and bookkeeping to ensure you get complete and accurate recording of your revenues.
Manage Time and People. Dealing with renters, vendors, and other people connected in the business of leasing will take up your time, effort, and money. A leaky faucet, an unfriendly renter, inconvenient appointment times for showing off your property - these are but a few issues you will be facing. Having a property manager deal with all of these will let you enjoy the pleasant facets of owning a rental property.

Most landlords only think of the cost it would take to have a property manager take care of their properties. However, as this article has outlined, it is effective and efficient to hire a professional company for your cause. You can enjoy the benefit of your time as well as your money earned, delighted that you hired a professional.

The History of Mission Beach

Mission Beach is one of the most popular beach destinations in San Diego. For locals and tourists, this area boasts a wide variety of desirable attractions. It is hard to imagine San Diego without some of the widely known bars and restaurants found there, or without the cement boardwalk that runs along the coast and is a second home to many bikers and joggers. Since it is a sandy peninsula, and some even go so far as to call it a permanent sandbar, it did not become developed as early or as easily as its neighbors.

Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, and Mission Bay Park were all beginning to be developed by the early 20th century. Building on sand proved more difficult, so most residential structures in Mission Bay were not built until the 1930's and 1940's, and even then they were offered only as summer cottages. The only way these became possible was because of a wooden bridge that was built between Mission Beach and Ocean Beach. In 1914, John D. Spreckels, an entrepreneur and developer in San Diego, offered small lots in Mission Beach for sale. Many people pounced, and now it is one of the most densely developed residential communities in San Diego, with approximately 36 homes per acre.

MISSION VALLEY

Previously, Spreckels had developed Belmont Park in the 1920's and it opened in 1925 as Mission Beach Amusement Center. He hoped to stimulate real estate sales, as well as encourage the use of the electric railway that he had created. Today there are many different attractions and rides at the park, but the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster and the Mission Beach Plunge are the only rides remaining from the original Park.

The bridge to Ocean Beach was demolished in 1951, just as Mission Beach began to come alive, it was never replaced and the easiest way to get to Ocean Beach from the peninsula is to take the bridge on W. Mission Bay Drive through the Mission Bay area.

Currently there are many different reasons people flock there. The strand is a common spot for runners and joggers, while Sea World is a short drive up the road. Be sure to visit sometime soon!

Private Space Flight Traveling Out of This World

Extreme Adventure Travel is about to take flight, and in doing so take well-to-do traveling public where no tourist has gone before. Indeed, they will boldly go, but they will also boldly pay for that opportunity, as well as take a little bit of risk as well. Private Space flight is alive and well and it's ready to take the game to a higher level.

Soon you will be able to take a trip around the moon, go stay in an orbiting expandable space hotel, or perhaps within the next decade or more take a trip to the Mars Colony, which maybe a one way excursion? Okay let's talk.

MISSION VALLEY

Recently, there was an interesting piece on the Technology Review from MIT "Delta-V Blog" written by Brittany Sauser on May 6, 2011 titled; "A Trip Around the Moon: Yours for 0 Million - Space Adventures announces a tourist seat aboard a new moon mission," which stated

"Space Adventures, a commercial space company based in Virginia, will give you a seat on a trip around the moon. The company says one customer has already signed up for the mission. The "round-the-moon" participants will launch in a Russian Soyuz Spacecraft to the International Space Station where they will stay for 8-10 days before taking the 3.5 day trip to slingshot around the moon, coming within 100 kilometers of the surface. It will take a further 3.5 days to return to Earth."

And it looks as if this could occur as early as 2015-2016, however if you are willing to wait until 2022 to 2025 you might be able to catch a tourist trip to Mars, but you may not have the guarantee of coming back, would it still be worth it? For many it would. There was an interesting piece on this in the Wall Street Journal on May 14, 2011 titled; "How We Can Fly to Mars in This Decade-And on the Cheap The technology now exists and at half the cost of a Space Shuttle flight. All that's lacking is the political will to take more risks," by Robert Zubrin.

The article discussed SpaceX and their plans, and they are pretty confident they can pull it off. As most people who follow these things realize, humans have had the technology to go to Mars since the 1970s, but political will, and costs have stopped the attempt. That's too bad, but perhaps private space tourism can pick up where NASA and the Federal Budget left off? Indeed, I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

Belle Boyd the Civil War Spy

Belle Boyd, La Belle Rebelle, (May 9, 1843 - June 11, 1900) was a Confederate darling.

Young, attractive Belle Boyd was a Confederate spy. Belle was born in Martinsburg, Virginia (Martinsburg is now part of West Virginia) and was only seventeen when the Civil War started. She had a knack for listening in on the conversations of Union officers who patronized her father's Front Royal hotel. Her familiarity with the countryside of the Shenandoah Valley provided the Confederates with valuable information in the spring of 1862.

MISSION VALLEY

Young Belle was an enthusiastic Confederate. The year before her spying activity began, Belle shot to death an intoxicated Yankee soldier who was attempting to raise the Stars and Stripes over her Martinsburg home. She was arrested and put on trial for murder. Belle's defense was justifiable homicide and she was acquitted, free to go on her way.

Belle Boyd provided General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson and General Ashby Turner with important information during Stonewall's Shenandoah Valley Campaign, that helped with the capture of Front Royal, Virginia on May 23, 1862. Belle warned the Confederates they should move fast so they could cross bridges before Yankee soldiers destroyed them.

In appreciation for her information and spy service regarding Union troop movement during the Valley Campaign, Stonewall Jackson gave Belle Boyd the rank of captain and made her an honorary member of his staff as an aide-de-camp. Jackson wrote to the young Belle (the "La Belle Rebelle" as a French war correspondent called her); "I thank you, for myself and for the army, for the immense service that you have rendered your country today." Boyd was a brave young lady, she served Colonel John S. Mosby and his guerillas as a scout and courier. Once while on a mission, Yankees shot bullet holes through her skirt.

Belle's lover gave her away as a spy. On July 29, 1862 she was arrested on order of United States Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton. She spent a month in Old Capital Prison in Washington before being released in a prisoner exchange.

Belle was arrested for a third time in June, 1863 and remained in jail until being released the following December. She had contracted typhoid, so she sailed to Europe to improve her health and also to deliver some letters for Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Belle then returned from Europe on a blockade runner, but this ship was captured by a Union warship.

With her capture, things may have been looking grim for the young, attractive Confederate spy La Belle Rebelle. Maybe she would be imprisoned, or even executed, but her luck had not run out. Union Captain Samuel Hardinge was put in command of Belle's blockade runner, his duty being to take the ship to the North.

Quickly, Captain Hardinge fell under the charms and spell of beautiful Belle. Hardinge let Belle and the blockade runner's captain, escape to Canada, they then made their way to England.

Captain Hardinge, lost in love as he was for spy La Belle Rebelle, was court-martialed and discharged from the Union navy. He followed Boyd to England and the two love-birds were married in August, 1864. Belle Boyd had won a romantic victory by marrying her Yankee captor.

In England, Belle Boyd wrote an account of her spy activities entitled, Belle Boyd in Camp and Prison and she began a stage career. Sadly, the love story of the Confederate La Belle Rebelle and the Union captain would soon end abruptly with Samuel Hardinge's death in 1865. Belle Boyd made her way back to the United States in 1868 and continued her career as an actress, but also gave lectures about her exciting life.

Belle Boyd died in 1900 while on a lecture tour in Wisconsin.

Outdoor Pole Lights

Outdoor pole lights can add beauty and functionality to your outdoor lighting scheme. Pole lights were once restricted to highways and parking lots but times have changed. Many landscape designers are using this type of outdoor lights as an important part of some of their award winning designs. Just think of the "wow" factor that is added to a landscape design by a well positioned wrought iron pole light! With the additional of some hanging baskets you can have something that looks like it is right out of a magazine.

lowes home improvement

The first things you need to consider is the actual placement of the light. In order to properly consider the placement you need to think about your goals. Are the lights or light intended to be primarily functional or for aesthetic effect or perhaps both. If the lights are needed to be functional, for example along a long driveway then we might need more than one. As with all landscaping design elements, it best to have things in uneven numbers, ie 1 or 3 or 5. In some cases a single pole light can work magic. A nice light positioned at the junction of the driveway and the walk to the front steps gives a touch of class to most homes.

LOWES

It is possible to get outdoor pole lighting at a variety of home renovation stores including Home Depot, Canadian Tire, and Lowes. These lights come in a variety of materials and are priced accordingly. The most common materials include wrought iron, cast iron, and aluminum. The most durable will be the most expensive and also the heaviest. The different models can range very modern designs with simple straight lines and square globes to very beautiful and intricate scroll work with antique shaped globes.

As people begin to spend more time in their outdoor space, they are beginning to care more and more landscape design. Decks and patios are becoming more elaborate and patio furniture has come to resemble furniture more commonly found in living rooms. The advent and popularity of the outdoor pole lights is just another step in this trend to make more use of our outdoor space.

Preparing For Your Interview - Knowing the CEO Helps!

As a former Director working within the Financial Services Division of a vast multi-national Information Technology (IT) corporation, I was extensively involved in pre-sales presentations and responses to Request for Proposals (RFP's). Invariably after several meetings with a myriad of executives and department managers, a formal presentation of our products and solutions was scheduled. In coordinating this presentation to the financial institution, we endeavored to ensure that key decision makers affiliated with the purchasing decision were available and would be present.

When preparing our executive presentation, a vital element incorporated was our Value and Mission statements. We emphasized how our values, culture, and vision coincided with the strategic vision and mission of the corporation. The genesis of this overlap in cultures was typically based on direct comments from the institution's CEO - information which was typically accessible on the corporate website. This segment of the presentation included a photo of the CEO (if available), and selected quotes.  This piece was highly targeted to reinforce and emphasize how our strategic vision corresponded with the values and foresight expressed by the CEO, resulting in a mutual common bond.

MISSION VALLEY

Many of the attendees were not even aware of the information we shared about their institution along with comments from their CEO. Invariably, this information had a significant and sobering impact on the attendees. In a highly competitive sales and marketing situation, every resource should be uncovered and exploited to your full benefit. In a pivotal situation, 'Name-dropping' doesn't hurt! After the presentation, we were commended by our resourcefulness and advised that our competitor's did not take the extra effort to uncover and incorporate this level of discovery in their presentations.

In many regards, a job interview is similar to an executive presentation. Taking the extra time to perform your 'due diligence' on the company and CEO will pay dividends during the interview process. You have the unique opportunity to distinguish yourself by communicating to the interviewer why you are well suited for the position. Similar to a presentation, you differentiate yourself by emphasizing how your attributes, values, and qualities align with statements from the CEO.

Predicated on the size and type of organization, a comment from the CEO is typically accessible on the corporate website. Just a casual, subtle comment such as -- "I noticed on your website that Mr. or Ms. stated - " ... ,  which clearly coincides with many of the same qualities, values, and ethics which I have listed in my Profile and, demonstrated throughout my career". An example to reinforce your analogy is always helpful. If comments from the CEO are not available, excerpts from corporate Vision and Mission statements will suffice.

All too often, navigating the corporate website to uncover the required information can prove a bit tedious. As with most companies, 'About Our Company' (or similar verbiage) is a lightly shaded link located at the very bottom of the corporate home page. By clicking on this link, significant content is displayed with nested links such as: 'A Message from our CEO', 'Officers and Directors', 'Annual and Quarterly Reports', and 'Corporate Profiles'. Recent corporate presentations are even posted for viewing and serve as an excellent source for updates on corporate activities. With a bit of tenacity and diligence, a wealth of invaluable corporate, and specifically, CEO information is available to bolster your insight and personal image with the interviewer. Take the time to capitalize on this information to reinforce your connection with the company.

To summarize, in your quest for a job, by exploring easily accessible information on the CEO (and corporation), you fortify your image and clearly differentiate yourself to the interviewer. You 'leap-frog' candidates who, although equally as qualified, were not as resourceful as you are. Record your discovery notes on a pad which you may 'tactfully' reference during the interview process. Comparable to the corporate presentation, when strategically marketing yourself, your intent is to impress, and,  have a positive impact on the interviewer. Do not forget the follow-up email to reinforce why you are the candidate of choice!

Wine Growining Areas in South Africa

The Cape winelands stretch from the rugged mountains and multi-directional slopes of the coastal region to the open plains of the Little Karoo where viticulture takes place mainly in the riverine valleys. South Africa's vineyards are mostly situated in the Western Cape near the coast. Rainfall on the coastal side, where fynbos and renosterveld vegetation flourish, measures up to 1 000 mm per year. Travel over the mountains into the hinterland and the rainfall decreases dramatically with the vegetation dominated by hardy succulents, cycads and aloes.

Currently around 101 607 ha of vines producing wine grapes are under cultivation over an area some 800 km in length. Under the auspices of the Wine of Origin Scheme, production zones in the Cape winelands are divided into officially demarcated regions, districts and wards. There are four main regions - Breede River Valley, Coastal, Little Karoo and Olifants River, encompassing 22 diverse districts and some 56 smaller wards.

MISSION VALLEY

BREEDEKLOOF

The Breedekloof district is characterised by vineyards which flourish on alluvial valley soils with adequate drainage as they rest on a bed of river stones. It covers a large proportion of the Breede River Valley and its tributaries. There are marked variations between the soils and mesoclimates in the different river valleys. This district incorporates the Goudini and Slanghoek wards. There are some 23 wineries on the Breedekloof Wine Route.

CAPE AGULHAS

Most of these maritime vineyards are situated in the ward of Elim near Africa's southernmost point, Cape Agulhas. The entire picturesque village of Elim, a Moravian mission settlement founded in 1824, is a national monument. Strong, cooling winds are prevalent in summer, ensuring a very cool ripening season, perfect for Sauvignon Blanc and also promising for Semillon and Shiraz. Generating much interest in the winelands, the still small hectarage of this coastal district shows great potential.

CAPE POINT

These maritime vineyards, some of them a mere kilometre from the sea, are situated on the western fringe of the narrow Cape Peninsula. This cool-climate district is recognised for its Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Now the first red wine vineyards, planted on north-facing slopes at Red Hill bordering the Cape Point Nature Reserve, have come on stream.

CONSTANTIA

On the southern slopes of the Table Mountain range and its world-renowned floral kingdom lies the historic Constantia valley, the cradle of winemaking in the Cape. The valley was the site of Simon van der Stel's 17th-century wine farm and the origin of the Constantia dessert wines which became famous throughout Europe during the 18th century. Rooted in ancient soils, the vineyards climb up the east-facing slopes of the Constantiaberg, where the vines benefit from the cool sea breezes blowing in from False Bay. The ward receives about 1 000mm of rain annually, making irrigation unnecessary, and has a mean February temperature of 20.6°C.

There are only a handful of cellars in this premier ward, where the cool climate favours the production of white wines, notably Sauvignon Blanc, and where the tradition of producing remarkable wines since 1685 continues.

DARLING

Darling, with its own wine route and several tourist attractions, is just an hour's drive away from Cape Town. The Darling district incorporates the Groenekloof ward, which benefits from being one of the closest to the cooling Atlantic and is known for the exceptional quality of its Sauvignon Blanc, the variety which initially spearheaded the viticultural progress of this area. Now wines with exceptional flavour expressions are also being produced from other cultivars.

DURBANVILLE

The vineyards of Durbanville, like those of Constantia, lie very close to Cape Town and border on the northern suburbs. Several estates and wineries, situated mainly on the rolling hill slopes with their various aspects and altitudes, continue to make a wide variety of wine styles. Some of the vineyards grow at altitudes as high as 380 metres above sea level. Wines from this ward attracting attention are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep soils, cooling sea breezes, night-time mists and close proximity to the ocean are beneficial factors when it comes to the quality of the grapes.

KLEIN KAROO

This semi-arid, elongated region stretches from Montagu, via higher-lying Barrydale towards Calitzdorp, Oudtshoorn and the Langkloof. It's known for relative extremes when it comes to soils and climate. Viticulture takes place mainly in kloofs, valleys and riverine sites in a rugged mountainous landscape. Muscat varieties flourish here and the area is known for its sweet wines. Today, there is an increasing focus on reds like Merlot made in an easy-drinking style.

Calitzdorp is famous for its port-style wines and here you'll find plantings of Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional and, on a small scale, Souzao. More recently, red wines made from the varieties typically used to make port are creating new interest here. The Klein Karoo is renowned for the quality of its potstill brandies which have brought home international accolades.

The most recently proclaimed ward is Langeberg-Garcia. Situated north of the Langeberg mountain range between the Brand River in the west and the Gourits River in the west, it encompasses the scenic Garcia Pass.

KWAZULU-NATAL

This geographical unit stretches from Greytown to Oribi Flats and the Midlands, where altitudes are up to 1 500 metres, in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. It's early days yet but indications have been promising.

LOWER ORANGE

The most northerly winegrowing area in the Cape, it's also the fourth largest, totalling in excess of 17 000 hectares, which stretch in close proximity to the Orange River. Predominantly a white grape area, reds are being increasingly planted. The wine grape varieties grown here are Chenin Blanc, Colombard, Chardonnay, Pinotage, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Tannat, Muscadel (both red and white) and Muscat d'Alexandrie.

Large trellising systems are employed in this region of which the hut, gable and T-trellises are the most in use. These create special microclimates which protect the grapes, allowing them to ripen away from exposure to the direct rays of the sun. Specific mesoclimates are created within vineyards located on the islands between the different streams of the Orange River where the close proximity to the water cools down the grapes to a considerable degree. The conditions contribute to creating climate pockets which are conducive to production of better quality wines.

The styles of wine produced by the various wineries along the 350 km stretch of river differ singularly in style and flavour from the eastern to the western wineries. The soil types also vary greatly. The wines of the more eastern cellars are characterised by higher natural acids and lower pH readings, resulting in quite delicate sensory profiles.

OLIFANTSRIVER

This region stretches in a belt from north to south along the broad valley of the Olifants River. The summers in this valley range from relatively warm to cool compared with some of South Africa's other wine areas and rainfall is low. Soils vary from sandy to red clay loams. With careful canopy management, which ensures grapes are shaded by the vines' leaves, combined with modern winemaking techniques, the Olifants River is proving to be a source of quality, affordable wines. The region incorporates the wards of Koekenaap, Vredendal and Spruitdrift as well as Bamboes Bay on the West Coast, which is generating some excitement, especially when it comes to Sauvignon Blanc.

The predominantly citrus-producing Citrusdal valley lies in the southern reaches of the Olifants River valley. The soils are mainly sandy alluvial soils from the surrounding Table Mountain sandstone mountains in the southern part of the valley up until Clanwilliam. Irrigation is obtained from the Clanwilliam dam where the water is of an excellent quality. The area incorporates the higher-lying ward of Piekenierskloof.

Some exciting wines are emanating from the cooler, high-altitude vineyards of the stand-alone Cederberg ward which borders on the Olifants River region.

OVERBERG

Newer viticultural areas have opened up in the southerly Overberg district. The high-lying Elgin ward, cradled in the sandstone Hottentots Holland mountains, was traditionally an apple-growing region. Now wines showing exceptional fruit are produced here with Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Noir and Shiraz doing particularly well in this late-ripening cooler zone. Award-winning wines are also emerging from the Kleinrivier ward near Stanford.

PAARL

About 50 km from Cape Town, Paarl is situated beneath a large granite outcrop formed by three rounded domes, the prominent one named Paarl (which means pearl) rock. This scenic town is home to the KWV and the venue for the world-renowned Nederburg Auction. The summers are long and warm, and rainfall enough to make irrigation advantageous only in exceptional circumstances. A large variety of grapes are grown in Paarl, of which Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc have the best potential.

The Paarl district includes the wards of Franschhoek, the 'gourmet capital' of the Cape which has retained its French Huguenot character; Wellington, a burgeoning wine area which is producing some promising wines; and the newest wards, Simonsberg-Paarl, on the prime foothills of the Simonsberg, and Voor Paardeberg.

The Franschhoek valley lies to the southeast of Paarl and is enclosed on three sides by towering mountains: the Groot Drakenstein and Franschhoek mountains which meet at the top of the valley and the Klein Drakenstein and Simonsberg mountains, found further down towards Paarl. Streams from the higher peaks flow down to the valley floor where they converge to form the Berg River, fast-flowing in winter when snow caps the peaks and a mere stream in summer, fed by the Wemmershoek Dam.

Some of the Wellington wineries stretch over alluvial terraces towards the Swartland's rolling hills and wheat fields, while others are found in the foothills of the towering Hawequa mountains, where folds and valleys create unique mesoclimates. Wellington, which supplies over 90% of the South African wine industry with cuttings, has some 30 grapevine nurseries, situated here due to the appropriate soils and warm summers. In winter, snow sometimes covers the mountain tops and night temperatures are generally cooler than at the coast some 60 km away.

PHILADELPHIA

A newer ward north of Durbanville, Philadelphia also benefits from cooling Atlantic influences. The hilly terrain of this area means some of the vineyards are higher than usual, up to 260m above sea level. This facilitates a significant difference in day-night temperature and results in slower ripening. Some highly regarded Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots and red blends have already emerged from this promising appellation.

PLETTENBERG BAY

The first vines were planted in 2000 in this pioneering district, the newest and furthest appellation up the east coast, in mountainous terrain some 20km east of Plettenberg Bay, with its wealth of natural beauty, unspoilt beaches and excellent whale watching in season. The cool coastal climate - vineyards are some three kilometres from the sea - and high carbon content of the soils are proving ideal for Sauvignon Blanc.

ROBERTSON

Dubbed the 'valley of vines and roses', the Robertson district's lime-rich soils make the area eminently suitable for racehorse stud farming and also, of course, winegrowing. Situated in the Breede River valley, the river is the lifeblood of this lower rainfall region. Although summer temperatures can be high, cooling south-easterly winds channel moisture-laden air into the valley.

Robertson is renowned for the quality of its wines and while traditionally considered white wine territory and known mainly for its Chardonnays and more recently for the quality of its Sauvignon Blanc, it is also the source of some of the Cape's finest red wines, particularly Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, while the distinctive fortified dessert wines for which it was originally famed continue to be produced. The district of Robertson incorporates several wards, including Bonnievale.

STELLENBOSCH

The historical town of Stellenbosch, which features some of the finest examples of Cape Dutch architecture, boasts a winemaking tradition which stretches back to the end of the 17th-century. The mountainous terrain, good rainfall, deep well-drained soils and diversity of terroirs make this a sought-after viticultural area. The rapidly increasing number of wine estates and producers (in excess of 160) includes some of the most famous names in Cape wine. The district, with its mix of historic estates and contemporary wineries, produces excellent examples of almost all the noble grape varieties and is known for the quality of its blended reds.

Stellenbosch, the 'town of oaks', is also the educational and research centre of the winelands. Stellenbosch University is the only university in South Africa which offers a degree in viticulture and oenology, and it has many of the country's most successful winemakers as alumni. The Elsenburg School of Agriculture is also near Stellenbosch, as is the Nietvoorbij Institute of Viticulture and Oenology. This organisation has one of the most modern experimental wineries in the world and, at its experimental farms (situated in several winegrowing districts), important research into new varietals, clones and rootstocks is undertaken.

The intensively farmed Stellenbosch district has been divided up into several smaller viticultural pockets including Banghoek, Bottelary, Devon Valley, Jonkershoek Valley, Papegaaiberg, Polkadraai Hills and Simonsberg-Stellenbosch.

Stellenbosch Wine Route, the oldest in the country and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Western Cape, has created several manageable sub-routes for tourists: Greater Simonsberg, Stellenbosch Mountain, Helderberg, Stellenbosch Hills and Bottelary Hills.

SWARTLAND

Traditionally a grain-producing area, in summer the Swartland district is marked by green pockets of vineyards clambering up the foothills of the mountains (Piketberg, Porterville, Riebeek, Perdeberg) and along the banks of the Berg River. In the past, the region was planted mainly to bushvines but trellising is increasingly being adopted due to advances in management strategies and quality considerations.

The Swartland literally translated means 'the black land' and the area takes its name from the indigenous renosterbos (rhino bush) which still turns the landscape a dark colour at certain times of the year. The district was traditionally a source of robust, full-bodied red wines and high quality, fortified wines.

In recent times, some exciting award-winning wines have emerged, both red and white, and the area continues to produce top port-style wines. Increasing percentages of Pinotage, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are being grown here, as well as Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc. It has two designated wards, Malmesbury and Riebeekberg. The district of Swartland borders Piketberg to the north, which is not dissimilar in both geography and climate.

TULBAGH

Surrounded on three sides by the Groot Winterhoek, Witsenberg and Obiekwaberg mountains, the vineyards of the Tulbagh district grow alongside orchards and fields of wheat. Soils in the valley are extremely variable. The area is characterised by extreme differences in day and night temperatures. Mountainous terrain creates numerous different mesoclimates which can be used to great advantage.

Unique to the valley's geographical composition is the 'cold trap', a phenomenon which occurs as a result of the encapsulating mountains, shaped like a horseshoe, with Tulbagh situated at the north of the 'bowl'. Within this bowl, once a prehistoric lake, the cold air of the previous night lies undisturbed. With no air movement from the sides, this cold bubble is trapped under the warming air above as the sun makes its way from east to west. The result is relatively cool average daily temperatures.

The town of Tulbagh boasts 32 national monuments on one street, and here history and tradition work hand-in-hand with innovation. With today's high-tech water management and advanced viticultural practices, the true potential of this area is starting to be realised. At present there are some 18 wineries - several of them relative newcomers making acclaimed wines, notably Shiraz and Méthode cap classique - in this secluded valley.

WALKER BAY

This district, surrounding the seaside town of Hermanus, is reputed for the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines which emanate from the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley - this encompasses the wards of Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and the recently proclaimed Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The area is also being noticed for the outstanding and consistent quality of its Pinotage. Fine examples of Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Shiraz are also being produced here. The cool climate is the sought-after attribute in this area where vineyards benefit from persistent cooling winds from the nearby ocean. The soils - predominantly weathered shales - and terroir are also ideal for cool-climate loving varieties.

Both the Groenlandberg and Kogelberg reserves with their wealth of indigenous flora and fauna lie within this area, which also boasts some of the best land-based whale watching in the world in season (June to November).

WORCESTER

The Worcester district, in conjunction with the Breedekloof district (see separate entry), is the largest in terms of winegrowing area and volume, with the historical town of Worcester the hub of the valley. With around 19 560 ha planted, it accounts for nearly 20% of the national vineyards and produces close on 27% of South Africa's total volume of wine and spirits. It's also the most important brandy producing area and home to the KWV Brandy Cellar, the largest of its kind in the world. Several of the cellars here are bottling quality wines under their own labels. This district comprises several wards.

The other day I found myself frustrated with the slow progress on my new project. Other people involved, subcontractors, just 'weren't getting it'. Why couldn't they just see what needed to be done and do it? Why was everything taking so long?

I decided that the best thing for me to do was take a breather, so I went with my dog, Sultain, for a hike up the mountainside. As I am huffing and puffing up a 1000 feet of climb, even the dog is panting, I am mentally reviewing the 'to do' list I have to get through for the launch of seLFTech. It is clear to me that I am not going to make the self-imposed deadline of the end of January because of delays caused by other people.

MISSION VALLEY

Then suddenly, it occurs to me that I am falling into the trap of assessing blame instead of accepting responsibility. I am also allowing anger and resentment to prevent me from enjoying this moment.

Here I am, with my dog, going for our favorite walk up the side of a mountain to a spectacular vista and I am not even mentally present. What a waste! So, I make the effort and clear my mind to focus on just enjoying the moment.

Suddenly, a little ditty starts playing in my mind. Usually this kind of thing is an annoyance; some stupid ad jingle or meaningless song lyric that won't go away. This time, this is what I have going on in that tape loop...

"Climb every mountain, search high and low
Follow every byway, every path you know.
Climb every mountain, ford every stream,
Follow every rainbow, till you find your dream!"

Now, I recognize that tune, but I cannot place it. It is kind of funny that it shows up just now and I appreciate the irony. It makes me smile and I wonder if my subconscious has a sense of humor. I am still attempting to place the song when we get to the top of our climb.

I stop and take in the incredible vista; gazing across the two mile wide valley to admire the 4,500 foot peak across the valley. Suddenly it clicks and I start to laugh. Yes, my subconscious does have a sense of humor.

There is the picture, clear as this day, of Julie Andrews in the Sound of Music, singing atop a hill in the Alps with vast peaks across the valley,

"Climb every mountain, search high and low
Follow every byway, every path you know.
Climb every mountain, ford every stream,
Follow every rainbow, till you find your dream!

"A dream that will need
all the love you can give,
Every day of your life
for as long as you live.

"Climb every mountain, ford every stream,
Follow every rainbow, till you find your dream!"

It has been at least 35 years since I watched that movie. It is surely odd that those Rogers and Hammerstein lyrics should show up just now as I am climbing my mountain and also struggling uphill to get done what needs doing in my business world. Serendipity, to be sure.

Now, there is the perspective, the vista I made this climb to enjoy. It is breathtaking. The view from the top of this peak to an even greater peak I may someday also climb.

I had almost forgotten to enjoy this climb. Silly, silly me. Half the pleasure is in getting there. The struggle is often what makes the accomplishment all the more enjoyable.

This regular climb is what helps keep me physically fit. The continuous climb to the peaks of accomplishment helps keep me mentally and emotionally fit. Each step along the way is a victorious moment. Each moment is a fulfillment of my date with destiny.

As fellow contributor to this newsletter, Zig Ziglar, often says, "See you at the top!"

Organizing With Map Drawers and Drawer Knobs

Do you have a big organization problem? I certainly do. I can never keep track of anything, and I always need a ton of places to store my things for different projects. If you feel as disorganized as me sometimes, you should consider looking for a way to make organization easier. This means you might want to look into purchasing a set of drawers.

lowes refrigerators

You can buy tons of styles of closets and drawers, but my personal favorites are map drawers. This style is a closet with numerous drawers, each very, very short, each stacked one on top of another. If you have a lot of papers to file for different projects, map drawers are perfect.

LOWES

These drawers are typically extremely short in height, but long and wide in space. They are perfect for storing paperwork, maps, or anything else that is thin. I actually use them to store underwear and socks, because they are the perfect size.

When buying map drawers, I like to decorate them with beautiful drawer knobs, that you can buy at any Walmart or Lowes. These knobs can look however you want them to look, no matter what style of room and drawer. A good looking knob is important because that is the part of the drawer that you will see and interact with, every day, when using your drawers.

If you want to be more organized, you're going to need to invest in some proper equipment. If you are like me, and have tons of papers, get some map drawers!

The Risks of Serving Alcohol to a Minor in a California Hotel Or Restaurant

Every restaurant and hotel in California is warned repeatedly by the Alcoholic Beverage Control Department (still known by many as the ABC Board) in California, by food and wine attorneys, and by hotel and restaurant lawyers how dangerous it is to their reputation, income and liability to serve alcohol or liquor to a minor. The knowledge of this danger has recently been enforced in the minds of hotel and restaurant owners in the Coachella Valley cities of Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, La Quinta, Indio, Coachella and Cathedral City.

But the lesson learned in the Coachella Valley holds true also for restaurants and hotels in Long Beach, San Diego, Orange County, Santa Ana, Anaheim, Irvine, Huntington Beach, orange, Costa Mesa, Carlsbad, Santa Monica, Newport Beach, Buena Park, the Inland Empire area of Rancho Cucamonga, Riverside, and Temecula and up the coast to Ventura, Oxnard, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo as well.

MISSION VALLEY

In August two restaurants in the Coachella Valley, one in Rancho Mirage and another in La Quinta had their liquor licenses suspended for 30 days after serving alcoholic beverages to minors. Both restaurants chose to shut down and use the time for remodeling.

It's bad enough if the Alcohol and Beverage Control Board catches a restaurant serving alcohol to a minor, but what is unusual in these two cases is how the restaurants were caught and sad what happened to the minors.

In the case of the Rancho Mirage restaurant, the minor died in a car accident. In the La Quinta incident, the minor jumped to his death from a pickup truck.

It gets even worse. In the Rancho Mirage restaurant case, the minor was riding in a car with a friend who had also been drinking but who was not a minor. Both died when their vehicle hit a curb and rolled over. Both had been drinking at the restaurant. The older of the two had a blood alcohol reading of 0.23. The minor had a blood alcohol reading of 0.12. The legal limit in California is 0.08.

In the La Quinta restaurant incident, the 19 year-old minor had dinner with his girlfriend, with the twenty-two year-old male driver of the vehicle, the driver's wife and their two year-old child.

At some point, it was reported, the driver of the pickup truck struck his wife. The minor then threatened to jump from the vehicle if the driver continued to fight with his wife. The minor kept his promise while the truck was driving between 30 to 40 miles per hour.

The La Quinta restaurant was also hit with a two year probation, which if violated, could lead to the revocation of their liquor license.

This litany of events does not even consider what number of civil lawsuits may be filed as a result of these two incidents, the grief of the families of those who died, or the losses the two restaurants can expect to incur as a result of the inattention of their employees.

When a restaurant or hotel serves an adult, in California there is generally no responsibility if that adult is later involved in a drunk driving accident. There are no actions taken by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. Not so when the restaurant or hotel serves alcohol to an intoxicated minor. Then all bets are off.

Mission Ridge - Ski Area And Historic Site

One of the unique things about skiing Mission Ridge near Wenatchee, Washington is that it is also the site of a military plane crash. In fact, non-skiers may not know that many of the ski area's run names and geographic features are named for the semi-famous plane crash. Mission Ridge itself, like Mission Peak and Mission Creek, gets its name from catholic missionaries who served in the area during settlement times.

On September 30, 1944 a flight crew flying a bomber from the Walla Walla army base crashed on the ridge after getting lost due to darkness and bad weather.

MISSION VALLEY

There is a section of the bomber's wing mounted at the ski area (and people can still occasionally find other remnants of the wreckage) with a plaque on it saying:

"On a stormy night of September 30, 1944, Flight Crew 22, on a training mission from Walla Walla Army Air Base, found itself off course and lost above the rugged Cascade Mountain Range. They were flying a B - 24 "Liberator" Heavy Bomber. The night was rainy and the valley was enshrouded with heavy fog. Around 8:00 p.m. the Beehive Lookout reported Hearing the drone of a plane's engines as it passed directly overhead. Within moments a fire was seen faintly illuminating the fog, alerting the lookout that the plane had probably crashed. Due to the darkness, weather, and terrain, search efforts were delayed. The next morning when a rescue party reached this rocky bowl, just 500 feet below the crest of Mission Ridge, they found the flames had been extinguished by the heavy rainfall from the previous night. Pieces of the wreckage were strewn hundreds of yards across the slope and the bodies of all six crew members were found. There were no survivors."

Some of the names that the Mission Ridge Ski Area has given in honor of the plane crash are; The Liberator Express Chair Lift, Bomber Bowl, Bomber Pass, Bomber Chutes, Bomber Cliffs, among others. Very few ski areas are also actual historic sites too.
